Black spots on Zelkova

I found black spots on one of my zelkovas today and I'm clueless. The spots are on a couple leaves and I am afraid they will spread. The Zelkova is young. The trunk itself is about the thickness of a pencile. I am new and want to keep my murder rate to a minimum. Sorry, thy pic is not well focused. Thanks for any help!!!

Re: Black spots on Zelkova

There is a disease "Black spot" on elm is sometimes caused by Gnomonia ulmea, but with your photo it's hard to tell.

Maybe look at

http://www.ento.okstate.edu/ddd/dis...lmblackspot.htm

Maybe try getting a little farther back and cropping down the photo. Also, the underside of the leaf would be a help

Regards,

Matt

Re: Black spots on Zelkova

Matt,
I cant seem to take a better pic than the one above. It's my dads camera & I don't know too much about it. As far as the underside of the leaves, they are clear of these black spots(at least for now). Also, I cant seem to connect with the link you provided. Is there anywhere else I can go to try to find out what is going on with my Zelkovas, as I am really concerned.
Thanks!!

Re: Black spots on Zelkova

Sorry the link didn't work. There was a period at the end. I fixed it.

Re: Black spots on Zelkova

Matt,
The leaves at the link you provided seem to be a pretty bad case. If this is what I have, it's not nearly this bad. I do have the tar like black spots, but they did'nt start white or gray. They just showed up black. Also, the leaves are'nt turning yellow and falling off. Is this this because I don't have such a severe case yet?(Maybe I did'nt see this happening as I am new and don't know what to look for.)
If this is what my Zelkova is suffering from, do I really need to cut off all the leaves with the spots, as it seems its not that bad yet, or can I treat it with a fungicide first? Can this spread to other trees that I have?? Also what is it caused from?
