I just purchased a 5 year old Black Olive (bucida spinosa I believe) a few days ago, and being new to bonsai, I have some questions.
It seems I have quite a few yellow leaves on my olive, and I'm not sure why. I also see some black spots here and there, and some of the leaves are dropping. I'm in USDA growing zone 5b, Rochester NY, and my olive sits 12" from an open window on the west side of my house which gets a good amount of sun in the afternoon. The temperature ranges from 70-84 degrees in the room with a ceiling fan to keep air flow going. I've lightly watered it once (on Sunday) since I bought it (on Saturday). The soil under the layer of stones feels moist enough to me, so I can't imagine it's a lack of water. I've been reading as much as I can about bonsai this past week, but I'm not sure why my tree is so yellow. I don't suspect spider mites, as I haven't really seen any webbing yet, though the black spots and occasional tiny holes in the leaves worry me. I'll post some pictures later today, but for now, anyone have any advice for this bonsai newbie? Thanks in advance.

i would just take off all the yellow leaves. i have seen information that says if a tree has lack of iron that the trees leaves would turn yellow. so maybe you need some type of fertilizer with some iron in it. or maybe its Bacterial leaf scorch. im a newbie at bonsai 2 so im am still learning. Good luck

Re: Black Olive: Leaf Problems

Couple ideas that might help. 1. Knock off the layer of stones, clean up and replace with good bonsai soil. 2. Get it outside in a warm humid spot. 3. Clean off all diseased leaves and dispose. So you can see any new progression of yellowing. 4. Dont fertilize yet. Give it a couple weeks to see how it progresses. 5. May just be your tree is readjusting to a new enviroment. Lets hope this is the case. keep us posted. A photo would help also.

After a bout with death, I believe my bonsai is going to live, though I still have black spots on many leaves and I've noticed a few small web-like strands once in a while.
I no longer have yellow leaves, though many of the leaves had turned brown and fell off over the past week. I believe it was due to my spraying it with what I thought was a safe pest oil, which probably did not do well for my tree. Any idea on what these spots are? Also, some of my moss has gone brown, but other pieces are starting to regain their green. For detailed pictures, view my gallery at: http://pictures.patrickhaney.com/bonsai08232003
