Better Nebari on Japanese Maple

How sucessful is punching small holes at the base of a maple, filling the small holes w/ rooting hormone and then raising the level of soil to cover the root base?

Any success stories w/ this technique, or are there better methods of improving nebari on a tree with decent nebari already.

got a picture? Is this a near mature tree or a just starting development phase? You can cut and lift bark, brush with rooting hormone and then pack/cover with long fiberes spaghmum moss. But if it is just starting, airlayer may be best.

Show picture.

Thanks, yes it's a mature tree which has a decent nebari already. There are no huge spots which need to be filled in, but there are area's which could be improved.

what is long spaghmum moss? I have seen spaghmum moss sold at OSH before.

thanks

Get the stuff they use for orchids (NZ White) or you can get the stuff they use for hanging wire baskets.

Cheers,
John

I tried drilling holes and using a rooting hormone on several tridents last year and all they did was heal over.

Before I wrote this I actually punched some holes and filed with rooting hormone, then raised the soil level using 50% sifted turface 50% orchid bark. Hmmmm..... not sure if I should uncover and re-try with raising bark and using moss. or I could just wait untill next season.

What do you think? thanks

I'll do this today and post pics. Do you know any major locations i.e. O.S.H or Home Depot where I can find the long S. Moss?

thanks!

I usually buy it by the bale, but you can get from HD, Lowes, etc ask them where they keep their Orchid supplies. I twill be a $5, I mean $9 (you are in California, he, he) investment, or less. John

Have you considered thread grafting some roots? Granted, I am brand new to bonsai, but I've read about it and last night in my introductory bonsai class I saw some slides of it. It seems to be an effective (and really neat) way to increase attractive nebari on your tree.

Oh! Just found this link http://www.bonsai4me.com/AdvTech/AT...aftingroots.htm
