Same here with Japanese Maple, I'm going to try some approach grafts this year, once I pick up seedling material.

Here's the base, i may actually air layer just above the graft. Although I am scared.


You drilled holes through the base, but layering makes you nervous??!!

I would think that you are taking very little risk with an air layer. If it fails, it most likely will just heal over, not die.

I diden't drill holes in the base. I made small upward slits raising small sections of the bark packing them with sp moss and rooting hormone. If this does not work i believe it will be difficult to even notice in a few years.

If I layer and it does not work, I think it would look terrible.

Couple layering questions:

1. Wondering if I layer it, and rooting is sucessful, will the roots be able to support the new tree-as it's a dwarf maple and was grafted in the first place, also should I leave the laced corset pot on the tree for more than one season because the trunk is so thick and it's a dwarf maple?


2. Is the best time of the year to apply the layer, right when the buds just start to swell?
