best start for literati

Ok as I am trying to slowly get my feet wet in bonsai, I am ready to start my planning stage for my ultimate tree...Literati style. I'm interested in the best species for this style (conifer only) and what are some early things I can do to begin preping for this. Such as are there any species I should buy and plant in my yard now. I really like this style so I am in no hurry to get a tree in a bonsai pot yet. I'm hoping the boxwood holly and mugo pine I have will give me some good practice. Please point me to any webpages or threads that may help. You guys have been a great help so far. And I love pics to, it seems hard to find great pics of the bunjin.

A yard full of Shimpaku bunjins would be nice.

So if I got a bunch and planted them, would I do any thing to them? Like pluck off any low branches or just leave them alone till they get the desired trunk thinkness? Or go as far as to style them while in the ground? Man I got a lot of questions

Yup, you sure do!

ONe thing to do, I suppose, is to learn more about your goal as you set out. Here is a quick google image search:

Try a few different terms to get an idea of what the form is about to know where to go.

In general, the use of sacrifice branchees and shaping with wire apply to any style, just in a different way. Here you are going for a more slender, tortured trunk, but slender does not mean wimpy little, wisp, just different proportions. So you still need to use sacrifice branches properly placed to develop a trunk.

Then beat it all the heck to get your wabi sabi on
