C, Crow pretty much covered it.

What are you looking for in final size, what style are you thinking of, where will it be grown- both in USDA zone(where do you live) and in what part of the yard(Full sun, partial sun, shade).

There are many many types of Japanese Maples... in addition to the above questions you need to figure out if it is a Japanese maple you desire... perhaps a Trident or one of the many other types are 'whats you wants'.

Are you going to purchase this as a seedling? or a garden center tree? or a pre-Bonsai from a Bonsai Nursery or a tree that is already on its way?

I think you guessed it.... there are many ways to make music... there are many types of Maples.

Have you read the old posts? Are you a member of a local club?

What kind of reply is that to give a new poster <bemused shake of head> nothing like opening things up for dialogue...

Would you care to expand upon your constructive contribution to the forum?

Along the lines of...

which is easiest for newbies, and why

which is most tolerant of drought

which needs most sun protection

which is most susceptable to wind damage

etc etc

Regards,

TB

Treebeard,

Sometimes shorter answers are the ones the get the message across. Sometimes a short question offers a better "aha!" then does a long-winded rant.

I actually considered the analogy to be a constructive one. Bonsai is art. Music is art. Neither lends itself easily to the language of "best."

Besides, I'd bet my hat that momijimaples knows at least as much about maples (and perhaps bonsai as well) as I do...

I visited http://www.mountainmaples.com and clicked the treefinder link. When I selected the "Suitable for Bonsai" box, and clicked search, 141 results came up! I turned it off and 297 results came up. So it seems like we have the potential for a good crowd of maples.

Personally I prefer the garden variety green palmatum, because they seem to be the strongest of a fickle bunch.

Regards,

Matt
