Beginner wiring mistake?!

After wrapping wire around the trunk of a boulevard cypress. I tryed to bend the main trunk. I was gripping the wire to hard up against the bark of the tree as I was bending. The end result was a tear in the bark.

1 - I should've used rafia!
2 - I should've taken a break after 3 1/2 hours instead of rushing!

With that said. And another lesson learned the hard way.
What can I do now to help this tree recover from this wound?

If you look close under the wire you will see the bunch of bark piled up.

Hi Patmac,

I think the wire is covering the tear? It's hard to see much in the photo.

You'd have a hard time bending a trunk that thick with aluminum wire, even if you apply it right. Raffia and a branch splitter would help. I can't see the extent of the tear but if it's less than half the circumference it will probably be okay.

Regards,

Matt

The wire is covering most of the tear. And it is most definitely not more than half of the trunk.
I thought that it might be ok.
But in the future I would like to attempt to err on the safe side. …….
(the sound of me laughing at myself) …… Yeah Right!

Thanks Matt for the input.

Bark damage from wire

It's hard to see where you damaged the tree, however I would remove the wire now and let it recover before trying to bend it any further. What was the reason you were wanting to bend the trunk to begin with?
In the future use heavier wire and try to use copper wire if you can find it. Copper will allow you to use a thinner gage wire. Do not squeeze the wire as you bend between your finger and the tree. But merely bend the trunk a little at a time holding each side of where you are bending. And do not wrap the wire tight on the bark, remembering that it is only a guide and should not be tight to the bark.

Good luck, Hector
