Back Bud On Azalea
I collected a large azalea from a neighbors large (yes, I HAD permission....!) and cut it back brutally to basically a trunk with what I hope will be three large branches eventually.
In short, I did it back in the fall, and I have exactly zero growth on it, just bare bark. The tree is still alive, as demonstrated by scraping a little bark, you have green cambium underneath. I live in Los Angeles, and my maples are just starting to break bud... Does anyone have any idea whether this tree is likely to back bud and give me some growth...or should I just find something else for the pot! |

Give it some more time. If it's still green there is a chance it will bud. When you cut the roots in collecting you remove alot of the reserved sap that the tree needs to push new buds. It may just be sulking for a while.

Give it a while! I think it's quite likely to push buds. Azaleas are very good at this, and they're not among the first to leaf out so falling behind the maples is little cause for worry.

Another thing I meant to add is to keep it in full sun for the time being. That will help the budding. Then when it does bud you can give it some afternoon shade like azaleas seem to like.

I did exactly the same, as instructed by walter pall, since azaleas are the most back budding. I now have nice healthy leaves, waiting to become branches. Just don't disturb the root ball and you should be fine. In 3-4 weeks you should have buds coming out...however, I did mine in mid summer.
Also, azaleas enjoy partial shade so I would not put it in scorching sun! depends where you live ofcourse . Here in OZ, it's quite hot during the mid day.
