Craig,
I don't know where you can obtain azalea material ( I won mine as a door prize at a class on azalea). But I learned in the class that El Dorado Bonsai in Placerville Calf specializes in Azalea training among other things. Tel 530-295-0200. I bet they can steer you in the right direction. See add in Bonsai Today Magazine. Stone Lantern also carries a great book on Azaleas called Floral Treasures of Japan worth reading. It explains why it can be difficult to obtain material, Import laws and propagation history. Hope this is helpful as I am no expert ! Lesley

Satsuki azalea aren't very common in garden centers and regular nurseries. They do show up from time to time though. I found some this past spring. If you can't find them locally you may have to mail order. Indicum is a seperate species. What you are finding is probably Rhododendron Kurume. Don't overlook those either. If you can find some with small leaves and small flowers and nice trunks then they should make nice bonsai.
