It depends on the species and age of the tree. Some trees can be forced to back bud in a specific location under the right circumstances and others, where the only option is to graft a new branch where desired.

You guys are being awful vague about what kind of answer you hope to receive. My first reply is not a dodge on issue but the truth of the matter: It depends on the age of the tree, the species of the tree, and in most cases how healthy the tree is, or is not. You cannot get a more specific answer without some additional input. I am not the great Karnak. Anyone telling any different with the information you have provided is giving you faulty information.

you can thread graft roots or branches but i'm pretty sure it won't work on evergreens but like Vance says you need to be more specific

I understand, no offence taken. However; lets look at the issue. The terminology "make a branch come out" suggest encouraging a dormant bud to become active in a location where you desire a branch. This is the question as I understand it. If that is correct my original response is true and acurate: It depends-----! It is possible to graft a branch almost anywhere you want one, even on a conifer. Thread grafting is the process where by a hole is drilled through the trunk and a branch is threaded through. Usually not possible on a conifer. An approach graft is where a branch on the same tree is allowed to grow long, then bent down, up, or around to the location where you desire a branch. The adjoining areas are cut down to the cambium, the bent branch is aligned with the cambium on the trunk, or another branch for that matter, it is tied and wired in place and the wound is sealed with cut past or wax and allowed to remain this way until the wounds both heal together. This will take one to three seasons depending on the size of the branch but usually smaller branches are the preferred instrument in this case and one season usually does the job.

Actually, the question suggest that the person is very new to the art and things like "back budding" and "Thread/approach grafts" might just as well be in martian. Allow me to suggest to Malsteen a few introductory web sites that I found very useful. www.bonsaiprimer.com www.bonsai4me.com http://www.bonsaisite.com/ |

You are probably right, it is the lack of response that is starting to bug me. I have better things to do than spit into the wind electronically.
