another dumb question...
What should I do to prevent moss, algae or lichens from growing on a trunk? Or does this matter to the health of my tree?

I don't even like moss as a covering even though its a long established tradition. I like to be able to see the condition of the soil. I have a tree that developed root problems because the moss hid the problem. I use a tootbrush to keep the trunk clean.
