Anchor Wires And Repotting
Hello All,
I keep reading about anchor wires, and I understand that these are passed through the drainage holes in a U shape when repotting. What do I anchor it to though, the root ball? How? Any pictures would go a long long way! ![]() Thanks!!! Alex |

Yes you've got the right idea. The wires are used to anchor the rootball in the pot so it doesn't move or tip after repotting. This is more important for larger or taller trees. I'm not sure where you could find a picture. I think Matt had a video clip of a tree he repotted that showed the process. Maybe he can point you to it if the link is still good.

There are wires used to secure the drainage screen in place, and wires used to tie the tree's rootball into the pot. As Tony indicated above, the rootball wires are used to secure the tree to help insure that the fine roots can develop without being broken by movement (weight, wind, animals, falls). Some folks tie their trees in with twine, but wiring at multiple points is the most secure arrangement.
1. You can find out more about securing drainage screen here: http://www.treebay.com/index.html?A...ainage%20Screen 2. For securing the rootball, the following articles will be of help. This article will show you how to secure the rootball when you have only a single drainage hole. Colored aluminum wire is used for illustration, but I recommend copper, which is less stretchy: http://www.treebay.com/index.html?A=103&B=Azalea%20Care More typically you will have two or more holes and can follow a method similar to the repotting of this Camellia repot http://forum.bonsaitalk.com/showthr...ot&pagenumber=2 Irregular pots and slabs may require a slightly different arrangement of wires, but two to four holes are very workable: Korean Hornbeam Repot http://forum.bonsaitalk.com/showthr...=&threadid=3633 I'll have to have a look at that movie and see if I can resolve the issues some folks were having with CODEC download. Regards, Matt
