Airlayering maple and redwood

My maples(palmatum) and dawn redwood are breaking bigtime.
The maples will be leafed out in a week or so and the redwood is
covered with new growth all along it's entire length.Question is how long
should I wait before beginning the layering? Untill they are fully leafed out?
Or can I begin sooner? The temps are still in the 30's at night rising to
the sixties during daylight hours. The maples are both forked about
3" up the trunk and I want to layer at the fork so I gain two more trees
as I would eventually be pruning them there anyway. The redwood is
about 7' tall and 3 1/2" at the base so instead of just a trunk chop I
gain a second tree with decent caliper. From what I've read I should
probably wait untill there is enough foliage atop to support the root system.
Am I right on this? Thanks.

Dean

Dean,

Typically, you'd wait until the new spring push of leaves have hardened off. You should have plenty of time to accomplish the layers this season if you wait until May to get started.

Good luck
Brian
