Question Aging trunks

I have a small Holly and Chinese elm that I would like to have more size and character in the trunks. My question is really for trunks in general I guess. How do you gain size and character in trunks? Can you prune in such a manner as to send growth directly to the trunk or fertilize in a way that provides greater trunk growth over other plant growth? Well anyway, any help in developing greater trunk mass in the shortest time (within reason) possible will be greatly appreciated. Greg

plant them in the ground, and dont prune them at all for a few years. That tends to thicken up the trunks, you can always cut back the excessive foliege later

Thanks for the quick reply but I should of mentioned that I do not have a yard in which I can plant in the ground. Am I doomed? Would a deep or larger pot be as good? Or should I build something? Please help!

Planting in the ground and letting the tree grow un-restricted is the fastest way. However if this is not an option then you can always use growing boxes which can be made or purchased. I use styrene fruit boxes (usually free at veg markets etc) Make sure you add more drainage holes. Do a search on this site for growing boxes for futher ideas...
