Acer Palmatum: Repot now?
There is a chance I may be getting an Acer Palmatum(standard green leaf) w/ approx a 2-3 inch diameter trunk in a giant plastic container, the container is slightly larger than half a wine barrell . The thing is in terrible soil right now, Looks like standard potting soil-no drainage.
Should I A. Repot ASAP, giving a very slight root trimming using nice bonsai soil. or B. Keep it as is untill end of Winter, then repot? Thanks so much! |

If it's been growing in there for a while, it's probably safe to leave until next spring and repot then...

Yup . . . if its got lots of new growth that appears healthy, I'd leave it alone. You could transplant it now, but it would really tax the tree. If you decide that a repot is necessary, I'd wait until the summer dormancy when the spring flush hardens off.

Thanks for the replys. I kinda slip potted the tree, as it fell out of the landscaping container while moving.
And plan to replant late winter. I would like to increase the trunk girth, but cannot replant into ground. Do you think this wine barrel would be good, or is it too small? It is wider, but more shallow than the current. The roots seem to almost touch the edges of the current container, but the tree is not really root bound. Also *If at all, should I trim the roots and or top of tree while the tree is dormat? I would imagine I should trim the roots a bit. Thanks. This barrel is big enough - make sure it has decent drainage holes. It's also plenty deep enough - eventually you'll need to pot it up into a pot with less than 5cm soil - you're trying to avoid deep roots, not promote... I wouldn't trim the roots particularly if your primary goal is growth. Actually I would, I tell a lie, I would remove any obviously large vertical roots. I don't like the look of your soil - it appears quite dense. Jerry Amsterdam
