i ordered some acer palmatum "deshojo" from a grower recently.
the plants were shipped defoliated and bare-root. the plants came in good condition, no apparent grafting scars though, so i think they are deshojo roots [which i have heard are notoriously finicky] i potted them imediately, in a 25% inorganic 75% organic mix in 1 gallon nursery pots and put them in the shade outside. this was all on the 9th, my question to you is how long before i should see buds, and do you have any other recomendations or did i miss anything? thank you very much for considering my questions. -krystal |

If the trees are still dormant, you will need a certain number of evenings above a particular temperature to begin the budding process. That cumulative effect could depend on the grower's climate too. If it were warming up there, the budding might happen sooner.
In any case, I'd expect to see some bud movement within a month to six weeks. Maples can be very tough to grow in a desert climate. You might want to check some of the Vegas area club websites and look into shade cloth and/or mist, humidity trays, etc. Anything that will keep the humidity up, temps down and leaves on! If you aren't already a club member, consider joining one to learn about what people are growing in your climate and HOW. Here's a desert bonsai FAQ: http://www.phoenixbonsai.com/PFAQ.html Regards, Matt

i've got a pretty good growing area, so that shouldn't be a problem, and honestly i think acers really only have trouble as landscape plants here in vegas. a couple years ago when i first got into bonsai i had a regular acer purchased in a 5 gallon container from a nursery that pushed out unbelievable growth in the full sun without ever burning [unfortunately roomates forgot to water it while i was gone and it dried up]
