Is that you, in the show, Lindsay??
![]() Around here, we are quickly corrected if we are at a club meeting and pronounce bonsai differently than the Japanese do. The Japanese say it "bone-sigh", with the accent on sigh. Although I do admit, when talking to family or friends it is just easier sometimes not to correct them. I'm curious about the braiding maples video...why did the plane tree die? Was it choked out by the other maples? Isn't the littlest maple being rather hastily potted? Messing with the roots a bit to lay them out nicely, and putting the soil into the pot more gently and using a chopstick or other implement to settle it, would be a good visual to reinforce proper practices. Are these "teasers" for us to buy a longer version later, or are the segments indeed this short? Wish we had a bonsai gardening program here! Joanie |

Joanie, they were 5 minute segments in 13X30min episodes. I'm cutting bits that are reasonable file size to post on the site. I don't feel any compulsion to pronounce correct Japanese. Yes it was a bit rushed in the sense that we shot 13 eps over 10 days. There were no second takes. I couldn't cover all elements of what is agreed as good practice in each segment but tried to cover most of them over the series.
I may offer them on DVD in the future but have no plans to at present so I'm happy to make them available to those that are interested for download. Rather than ask why the plane tree died I ask how did the other 2 bond. It was a bit of mischief by Adam Lutz a appretice of mine. I don't think it was the wire that caused it. Perhaps it was ringbarked by a harder tree. I'm not sure. I'm working on a new series at the moment. I'll let you know about it when it's finalised. Cheers Lindsay Farr |

Very enjoyable & informative Lindsay,
However, I think you should try to say "Crikey!" at least once per video ![]() Regards, Matt

Thank you for the reply, Lindsay! I really enjoyed the segments. I just wondered about the plane tree because having three trees grow together is such an unusual situation, it would be very interesting to do. But if the other two killed the one, would there have been a choice or a way of doing it that would allow all three trees to live? It must have been really neat when all three were in leaf.
Let us know if you ever put together a DVD or something to purchase, I'll be in line for it! And I agree with Matt, "Crikey" is a great word that we seldom get to hear.... Nice website, too! Love your catalogue. Thank you for making the downloads available!! Joanie |
