Success
Hey Tony...What do you think your success rate will be in grafting Ash, I have not done much with ash in the past? I only have one that is Ginormous ... prob a bit too big for me (Hard to lift it) Have you had experience with this in the past and do you plan to heavily bind the trunks to graft them into one tree (whithout the distinction of the three trees) or do you plan to present them a 3 individual trunks that have been fused?

hey john how are you ; in 2.5 years i havent had experience other than this playing that i have been doing. my gardeners common sense told it would work. most tree's that grow this vigorously will work especially when young and there is no bark. success has already been had the ash do not take long to graft but first year is delicate, i imagine by next year it will have no chance of coming apart. they were originaly binded heavily but not necessary now and it doesn take long for the bindigs to cut in. presentation is left to the element of surprise. we are a fair way off yet. personally in years to come i dont believe you will see 3 individual trunks, but one thing is for sure. it will what it will be, and that i look forward to very much.

I eagerly look forward to your photo essay and what you will be doing with these trees. Thank you for taking the time to write it, so that we can share their development with you.

Twin Box
BEND ME TWIST ME
THE JOURNEY OF 200 DESERT ASH

TWIN BOX
Before we get into more ash just a quick change of pace with some English Box. Found last year at a general nursery root bound and neglected $7.95. I immediately saw a shohin twin trunk which I will now take you through the development of.First thing is some choices what to cut what to leave and then some wire. I have labelled the photo’s but if there are many farther questions please don’t hesitate to ask, it gets me thinking. BEND ME TWIST ME

Forest And Group Plantings
BEND ME TWIST ME
THE JOURNEY OF 200 DESERT ASH
15/07/07
GROUP PLANTINGS AND FORESTS
Ok back on track. After binding some trees and doing some single tree plantings, I was over whelmed by how many trees I still had left over and there was no way I wanted 190 odd single ash trees taking up my space. So I started thinking why not plant them out as groups and forests and develop them as they grow starting now. I did this positioning the trees to be able to see all the trunks from side and front as best I could. I also considered perspective, depth and drawing the eye in and through the compositions, as best I could with the little experience I had. Wether these plantings were going to become something or not in the future, this exercise taught me so much. Now like the other’s it has come time to prune, wire and re pot. Not that I’m lazy, far from it. I try to prioritise my time to get all my trees done, so I started thinking how can I continue to grow these plantings with out pulling them apart each time? Well how about I allow the root pad to fuse as one, a thought worth considering. What are the drawbacks and how can I overcome them? If any body has some input for this I would love to hear it.PLEASE. The photo of this forest here was taken early spring last year, this one I will work on this weekend and explore these ideas. BEND ME TWIST ME
THE JOURNEY OF 200 DESERT ASH

GROUP PLANTINGS AND FORESTS
Here are some photos out of the box and naked. This is one mass of roots. Looking at it closer now I am not happy with the depth and perspective of this composition, so a couple of change’s need to be made. We start by giving the surface and edge’s a good pressure hose to enable a good look at what the roots are doing. With a pinching motion I begin to pluck away the excess fibrous roots on the surface and cut away any roots that are either growing too high or crossing each other. So what about the whole idea of fusing the roots into one big pad? Not this time, instead I will dissect it into 4 or 5 pads. This will allow me to make some changes as well as detail and reduce the roots a little more. I reduce the pads by taking 25 to 30 % more off from the bottom of the pad. All this is done by either saw or scissors. Then it’s time to re pot and position the forest. Cut and poke to make room for new tree positions. A fresh bed of soil position all your portions and fill in with more fresh soil and eagerly await for another year to see where this forest will lead us. At some stage I will do some pruning and wiring and will update a photo. Any questions please fire away. BEND ME TWIST ME
