Question Why do my Koi hide under rocks?

I have 2 Koi in my outdoor pond. I have a wonderful filtration system with a nice bell fountain. The Koi are very healthy and lively. However, they are always under the rocks. I have never seen them swimming. Unless I coax them from under the rock overhang. Not even when I feed them. Is this normal? The pond does not get direct sun all day long. I appreciate any help to this ? I can get. Peace!

Hi Skidancer1,
How deep is your pond?
You said even when you fed them, you didn't see them swim? They must get to the surface to get food unless you didn't use floatable food. So I'm guessing your pond is too shallow for your koi? If it is too shallow, in the summer time, koi will try to hide as deep as possible and/or under the rock.
Another thing I can think is your kois are afraid of some pets that tried to catch them up (cat, racoon, apossum-wrong spelling?).

Also, most fish will naturally hide from anything that flies or creates sudden shadows across the water... Herons and osprey will take a koi to lunch without a second thought.

maybe some more plant cover would make them more comfortable. ie waterlillies, lotus etc for floating or even shrubs etc that hang over the pond (maybe an evergreen that won't shed all its leaves into the pond). a bridge or log across may also provide shade/ security for them too

I have several Koi in my pond that behave in the same manner. I've found that the best time to see them swimming is early in the morning. They seem more active in the morning. However, if they see me they'll swim for the deep and hide.

.

My kois behave differently. Whenever I come near to the pond, they will swim close to me, so that they can get their food. It's so relax ;-) Bonhe

How long have they been there? It may take months for them to get used to a new home. Also, if they have been frightened by something trying to get them, they may stay hidden for a long time. I had an attack by a heron, who ate 5-6 of them and I thought they were all gone until one day 6 weeks later when 8 of them appeared. After netting the pond a couple of years later some racoons attacked, and the same thing happened, most survived because I'd put in better hiding material like 4" PVC pipe elbows, but they all hid for nearly two months.

This month, my kois didn't want to come up to the surface for food as usual. They just stayed close to the bottom of the pond and they only came up for food when sunlight gone. I wondered why suddenly they acted like that. Later on, I thought it's possible due to the green water! The last time I changed UV light was in 7/2007 and I was too busy lately and forgot to change it. Because of this ignorance, my pond water became the green cloudy water up to the point I could not see any koi down there!! My thinking was that the green water restricted the vision of koi. That's why they didn't know if the food was available on the surface or they knew it but they didn't dare to come up (scare of preys)(kind of reflex). As soon as I thought about the problem, I changed UV light. One day later, my pond started clearing up and the kois began to swim around the water surface and look for food. After day 4 of changing the UV light, the pond water now is completely clear and I am able to see its bottom again. My kois get back to their normal activity. Now I can explain why the koi didn't want to come the water surface when sunlight still there. I think sunlight rays hit to multiple particles of algar in the water and is reflected which causes flare for fish's vision. Good experience for me

The lesson is that the quality of the water can affect to the koi's activity.

According the Aqua UV light manufacture, it states the life of bulb can last 15 months, but in my case, it's only ~ 12 months. Bonhe
