Todd's New Pond

This isn't Bonsai, but here's my pond that i'm building. It's 4' wide at it's widest point and 8' feet long and 2.5 feet deep. I'm going to put in a waterfall also. I can't wait!!!!!

Nice looking pond so far...I'd love to see the finished project. My girlfriend and I just started ours and it has been a chore. We live in an appartment, so we had to go a different direction...can't really dig a hole now can we.

Just an FYI if you want to do a waterfall, look at paying at least $100 for a pump, that's at a minimum. We gave about $50 for our pump and it just isn't good enough.

Don't know exactly what you're planning, but don't use one of the plastic jobs like we have...they tend to crack during winter and then they float when everything thaws.

Todd,

Looking good.

There is a Ponds Forum lower down the main page. Just mentioning it, in case you have not seen it. Sure to be plenty of interest to you there.

Matt will probably move your post there in time.

I dug out a large hole/spoil rockery with a little excavator last year at the bottom of the garden. It has consolidated nicely, and I plan to cover it with sand and a liner this Autumn/Winter. Covered with weeds at the moment :-(

Regards,
Ian.

I'm going to use liner. I'd like to cement it in...but can't afford that at the moment.

I'm sorry i didn't see the ponds section.

Ian, What are you going to do with your "large hole/spoil rockery"? If you line it and put sand in it you could make a bog. I'd like one of those too

Sincerely,

Tod

Tod/d ??

I shall cover the hole and spoil with sand to prevent any rocks etc. . . punturing the liner that is then laid ON TOP. You can still make a bog garden, by having a shallow area next to the pool, that has a "run-off" from the water line. Or have a separate "moulded liner" filled with soil sited close by to give a natural effect.

Lots of books show how this can be done, and I am sure some "google time" will reveal plenty of sites to help you. (As well as bT)

Regards,
Ian.

Yes...I've spent hours of time on google looking up ponds. Do you have any pictures of your spoil?

Ian,
A short thought on this.
I built my garden pond about 15 years ago I think. I put a nice layer of sand in the bottom for this, but found that it wasn't many years before rocks started pushing up against rubber liner anyway. AFTER, I did that, I decided newspaper or old carpet or carpet padding would have been better. All are cheap or free.

Next time
Regards,
Dale

YES!!! I went to a local carpet store and grabbed 3 pretty large rolls of carpet to pad the entire pond and berm, before i put in the liner.
