Potassium permanganate
I have been reading about Potassium permanginate to "sterilize" new plants before putting them in the pond thereby avoiding possible contamination. *What exactly does this kill, is it necessary and, if so, where can I get it? *Thanks.

Re: Potassium permanganate
It's potassium permanganate, with an A. *I changed the message subject. *
There is some info about treating ponds with PP, and you could apply this information to treating a tub of plants before putting them in your pond. *This is a good idea as they can harbor disease and parasites. *Salt can be effective too in low concentrations. *Here is the link: http://www.ponddoc.com/WhatsUpDoc/FishHealth/PP.html you can also by PP by the teaspoon at the same site: look almost at the bottom of this page I used to be able to get PP at the drugstore about 20 years ago. *I don't know what they did with it at the time, probably an epsom salt bath kind of thing. *I hadn't tried again until last fall, when they siad they don't carry it anymore. The pond doc site also has a nice search engine that you can access from the ponddoc.com main page. *It's one of the best help sites I've seen. *I've never bought from them, but they look responsible. Regards, Matt
