Which pest was it?

Does anyone have an opinion about what attacted my pond? It's either a herron or racoon.

The pond is approx 3 feet deep with shallow ledges. I have seen both in the general area before.

The attack took place sometime after sunset. The following morning, I found evidence of 3 goldfish up in the bio falls (skin & tail parts). There was no evidence of rocks being disturbed around the pond...but the water was sudsy and the surviving fish were very skitish.

I would have thought that birds would eat the fish whole.

In the meantime I have taken countermeasures with an electrical fence and net. I'll be taking the net off in the next few days and monitor closely.

Any ideas as to who the culprit was?

RandB, I'm not a pond person but I do have a little knowledge of the animals you mentioned. My vote is the 4 legged guy. The Herron would take the who;e fish and be gone....He would sit in the pond, wait...wait..and strike, then fly away! Its the racoon, in my opinion anyway!

Yep. I think it was racoons. Those Heron are swallowers. Only the hook beaked guys like eagles and hawks are equipped to rip & tear like that, and its unlikely they'd hang out around your pond. The racoons that attacked here a couple years back ate only the heads of rather large koi, and sometimes just a bite of that, then went back for more fish.

My dad has some poultry netting across the top of his pond. Not the chickenwire, but the larger maybe 2x4" hardware cloth kind. It doesn't look great, but it works very well.

Sorry to hear about this.
