Nice fish! looks like a Kohaku, Showa Sanke, and a Tansho. The Sanke is awesome. Let me know if the Tansho grows pine cone scales down it's back? Then it would be Ogon Tansho. Very rare indeed. Later, Al

wow, nice looking fish matt.
i wish that i could keep koi in my pond but the great blue herron that stalks the area (as well as some racoons) would make that a repeatedly costly endeavour. the bulk goldfish will have to do. nonetheless, great fish.
ps-- any pics of your pond

Kohaku- Orange color on a white ground
Showa Sanke- Orange and black on a white ground.
Tansho- white fish with red or colored dot on top of head.

Many Tansho get pine cone scales. Pine cone scales are black scales that grow in a staggered pattern from the backbone out. Usually about two to three rows down each side. They look very cool. They are called Ogon.

hi there! actually an OGON is a single coloured fish like a full white or a full yellow one!
doitsu is actually used to describe a fish with a small amount of scales but mostly a leather like a "leather jack" kind of fish. you can get for example a doitsu kohaku etc etc

ogon is of purecolor! simple! heheh

The top koi is a Doitsu(scaleless) tancho hariwake. It is old style armored scale not seen so much now a days in top breeding.

Doitsu came from Germany and is also reffered to as German scaled. These were bred for food carp to eat so they would not have to clean the scales.

Anyhow the first is Doitsu Tancho Hariwake. The yellow dot will probably fade or get really small as koi gets larger.

Second one is a sanke. Its not showa as someone has said. The 2 look similar but are different in many ways.

Last is a Kohaku red and white fish some say Orange and when they are young the orange or persimmon color.

Anyhow if you are having coon problems a scarecrow would work but also works on pets and neighbors cats as well. It will work on you as well
so it will take time to get used to it.

A properly built koi pond would rid of those pests and herons as well.

Hope this helps and was no way intended to be snotty...
