Carl, I think that it is fair to charactarize what you have said as attempting to force your opinions on others. I find myself in substantial disagreement with you, but if asked to express my opinion I'd certainly try to do so with more grace and courtesy than you have done.

Actually, I find his opinions are expressed with a distict pungency, and are directed at the book, not other posters.

Sort of saves walking around the point to spare the feelings of the author, who, in Carl's opinion, seems to using the term "Zen" as a marketing tool.

Makes me think of the ultimate best seller:

Lincoln's Doctor's Dog

Besides, it sounds as though the design advice is good

You're going to have to find another player. I've said what I thought. If anyone finds it offensive, I apologize.

Hi Carl, I have always linked zen and bonsai. I thought the two kind of went together at some level. Matt describes it better than I could in his reply to the post zen and bonsai?

Paul, thanks for this thread. This book might just make it onto my xmas list

It is selling at a very reasonable price on amazon UK at the moment, there is also a mini review there.

Regards,

TB

Hey Bart,

No worries. My statement was written in reflection of the whole thread, not just your post exclusively......I just know that this thread is potentially going to ruffle a lot of feathers...(No pun intended Carl.....hehehe)......

It's all good. I am in a lot better spirits lately and learning to enjoy all types of debates........so......Bring it on!!!!.......there are a great many views in this forum.

Personally I don't equate Zen with Bonsai, but that's just me.

Enjoy all,
H

Fred et al.,

Decide what you will about the propriety of my tone, and assume what you will about the background of knowledge and practice behind my statements.

I have no interest in defending myself from the vile charges that I have willfully engaged in persuasive argumentation in an online discussion forum. Nor have I any interest in defending the perspective that Zen may actually have some meaning beyond the pseudo-philosophical ideas of cyclic return, minimalism, transience, and dialectic tension with which it is all too often associated in the western popular press.

So decide what you will - or better yet, go out and study or even practice Zen and/or Bonsai on your own, and form your own opinions based on less sandy foundations than those that seem to prevail around these parts.

With my best regards,
Carl

IBC Commentary

I was meandering through the IBC list today in my emails, and saw that there is also a discussion on this very topic there.

It amazes me, that so many people jump to conclusions without reading the book. CHECK THE BOOK OUT>>>>>THEN you can give some sort of critique.....thats all I am sayin!

I am not directing this towards any of you here....just in general.

Check out the IBC Archive about this book HERE

Carl, thanks for your reasoned and reasonable response. When I go back and read my comments, I often think that far from contributing to a calm and reasoned discussion of interesting issues, I often create the very heat and ill will that I deplore. I've often seen comments that the internet is a mode of communication that is very new in human history and without the cues that we're all used to in face-to-face communication, we often misunderstand each other and conflict results.

I'm left baffled. I'm not happy with the tone of my comment, yet I think we have different perspectives on this interesting issue. From the many comments you've made in the past, you are certainly not a person that I find to be unintelligent or offensive. In fact, my immediate reaction to your comments were that they were out of character.

Well, peace. I guess if we are in disagreement, it probably means I have more to learn
