I received my books last night and I am postively impressed by the content.

The books all start with a species introduction, care calendar, yearly growing pattern calendar, recommended soil mixes (content and particle sizes) according to the stage of development, products to use for specific pests and diseases. The book also shows a use for the fines left after all the soil sifting

I am currently going over the "flowering quinces" book (volume 10) and the amount of information contained is amazing. Luckily, I have a native Japanese speaker at home for the translation of the first chapter. Everything afterwards is followable without translation.

From the first glance at the "plum and cherries" book (volume 6) and "needle junipers" (volume 7), there are some very interesting deadwood projects made only with the concave cutter, an exacto knife and the patina of time.

In fact, that seems the common thread in the books... use the simplest tools, the simplest methods, let time do its work and enjoy the trip.

I will definitely order the rest of the collection over the next weeks/months.

Just whant to add my thought aswell, i bought the "Make a minibonsai in 3 years" and 3, 4, 5, 9 and 10 of the Mini bonsai series. Its really a set of books worth buying, just his use of rootcuttings turned upside down is worth the cost of the books Just looking through those books straightened alot of questionmarks i had in my head regarding some really nice Minibonsai i have seen Rest of the set is a given buy for me.

Kai,

By "
Make a minibonsai in 3 years", you mean "3年でできるミニ盆栽" right? I think I'll add that one to the collection soon

Kai,

Awesome, thanks! I am adding the book to my wish list

More news about the translation... Guy Maillot bought the translation, publishing and distribution rights to the complete series from the Japanese editor. The books will be published in English and in French, with the first book expected to hit the shelves this year. It is the maples book (no surprise, as Guy loves maples) with the 13 other books to follow.

Thanks for the update Michael. It will be interesting to see some translation since I have been looking at those drawings for 6 years!

Cheers, Al

Ditto... I'll still order the ones I'm missing in Japanese to support the author. I will also probably order the translated edition if there is good feedback about it.

Al,

The translation would definitely be interesting for the first chapter... the species specific cultivation tips, the fertilizer recipes, the products to use against the specific diseases/parasites and stuff like that. What puzzles me is the dunk he seems to recommend in November and December... I'll ask my wife tonight when I get home

The rest of the books don't have that much text and you can get along by the drawings if you know the following two kanji:

月: month, 9月 means September
年: year, 5年 means "5th year"

If you see somethine like "5年 gibberish 9月", it would of course mean in September of the 5th year.

Judging by your thread on the tridents, I don't think you really need the translation anyways
