Out of Print bonsai books
Hello,
What's the real deal about the out of print, rare, hard to find bonsai books that sell for such high prices? The book by Peter Adams, Bonsai Design:Japanese Maple for example. Do people pay so much for this book for the content or because it's a collectible and out of print? A whole book about Japanese Maple sounds great to me, but does this book really shed a lot of light on the subject? Are there other species specific books like this that are still in print? I'd rather buy a bunch of books each having a lot of information about a particular species than a few books with a little information about a lot of different trees. Anybody have any suggestions on a good book about deciduous bonsai? Thanks to all, weirdowl |

I'm sure there are a mix of reasons. There are certainly book collectors involved. There is no other reason to explain why an issue of Bonsai Today Magazine #2 can sell for a couple hundred bucks.
Japanese Maples by Adams happens to be a good book, which could explain its popularity. I think these titles come up from time to time in the used section at Amazon.com or ***E-BAY*** I think that Dave DeGroot's handbook on design is very good. You can come by that one on the Weyerhauser site (see bonsaiTALK Links) or perhaps in the BCI Bookstore. John Naka's Bonsai Techniques 2 is really good for learning how to duplicate specific tree characteristics. Regards, Matt Regards, Matt

One of the reasons this book is so good, is that Peter goes into great detail outlining how to make great maples from ordinary stock. There is in depth how to pics on trunk development and trunk chopping. He even outlines the ETA of when to expect the finished project and what the trunks should look like following his keen advice. The trees in the book are top notch as well, and his choice of pots are exquisite.
Just the tree on the cover counts for about 10.00 in my opinion. Try to find this book, if you like maples you won't be dissapointed. AK |
