Are the new Sunset Bonsai, and the Ortho all about Bonsai books any good? I just browsed through them and liked what i saw. Do you guys with lots of experience recommend them? Thank you.

Don't know about the Ortho Book but the Sunset book (New Edition) is great! I have used it as a reference book and re-read it a number of times. The info is superb for a newbie, an all inclusive technique book. BTW, I have purchased at least 6 extra copies for my friends who want to get into this hobby. Great Gift!
But, like trees you can't have only one and I'm collecting bonsai books too! Stone Lantern has some good ones and I also have gotten some from Amazon and Barnes and Noble. Then there's Dallas Bonsai for John Naka's texts ... Colin Lewis has good ones and there's the new Craig Coussin's Bonsai School . . . I just ordered Peter Adams' Flowering Bonsai from the UK . . .

=('): Sorry you asked me? I have alot of opinions!

Oh! I forgot Jerry Meislik's new Ficus Book- can't wait to get my hands on one! And ... OMC needs to do one on accent plants!

Kev,

I am having trouble with this one. You skimmed both books and liked what you saw, but you did not buy at least one of them. Instead you place a post here asking us whether or not the books are worth buying. Since you seem to need advice about what to read, my advice is read what interests you. That is the only way you will ever retain what you have read. So, Kev, trot out and buy the book you liked the best. Me entende? You may now consider yourself empowered to make both a decision and a purchase. Good luck and have fun.

Gary

Since i am only buying one book i thought id get thoughts from fellow bonsai artist as to which book they liked better. That way i wouldnt foolishly spend 15 bucks on a book that wasnt highly recommended. I thought it was a good idea! I think they call it book reviews.
My thread is just asking for a simply opinion from someone or anyone that has read either book. Sorry if this is too much to ask for.
BTW, Thank you lesley for your opinions, i appreciate it.

I have only been in the hobby for a short time (2 years roughly) and for less than a year it has become a serious hobby of mine and I love it. Books are something I have always been big on, and bonsai books are no exception. I have about 6 books in my home collection now, and funny you should mention the Ortho book because I just bought it on a recent business trip. I picked it up at Barnes N Noble. I spent about two hours in the store evaluating the bonsai books they had, and the new Sunset book and the Ortho book came down to my last to to decide between.

The Ortho book has some really great pictures in it for wiring, pruning and the like, probably some of the best I've seen in a book and it's right up there with the newer version of the Sunset bonsai book. I chose to purchase the Ortho book based on my own personal opinion, but also based on the nice resource listing they have in the back of the book along with some other nice things such as the US zone map. Keep in mind, my next trip to the book store I will purchase the Sunset book but the Ortho book is very useful.

Just my two cents!
