The Modern Bonsai ( The Book Of Books)

I aquired this new book today. The local bonsao monger just came back from a gift show in Japan Town, San Francisco.

This book is pictures only, it is for inspiration, and is broken down into 7 sections:

Conifers
Deciduous
Flowering
Fruiting
Kusamono
Showcase
Pots

The book is 9" x 12" and 1/2" thick, paperback, and 119 pages that are really glossy and thick. Almost cardstock. The trees are all shohin, and the book reminds me of the annual Gafu-ten book that comes out each year comemorating the exhibit. The cover:

Some sample shots from the book. All the trees are shown on wonderful stands which serves dual purpose for me with some great views of more contemporary standage.

From the first section Shohaku , or trees that don't shed their leaves.

Each section has a cover page that is written in Japanese and English. The section is detailed with verbage as to what the content of the bonsai are following on the pages.

The pot section is to die for. I only wish I had 5 percent of what is pictured there.

This is a wonderful inspirational book, with many pictures, and all very high quality. I suspect that most if not all the photo's were probably taken at Gafu or equivalent exhibition.

For me, quite a bargain at 5 score...

ISBN4-87736-079-4

Regards, Bonsai-al

Glad you found a copy, Al! It is a very nice book.

Another review, with more pictures, is in this thread.

Cheers,
Carl

Thumbs up

I'll add my 2cents....Great inspiration. If anyone is looking for this book - try www.natureswaybonsai.com. They may still have a few copies. They don't list the book among the more common books offered on their website - give them a call or drop an email to ask about Modern Bonsai. I didn't think to ask if they had any more... I've enjoyed mine this past week!

I think the largest tree I've seen in the book was listed at 33cm. It's fascinating to see how 'tree like' the very small ones can be - now *there* is some artistry. Image/ideal of tree, in miniature.... My favorites (as usual) are the deciduos, flowering, fruiting, err.... There's lots to like in there.

Yes, this is a nice book! I bought it for the pots in it!
I traded some pot(s) for it last year from Dave Paris at miniature-bonsai.com.
I just saw him yesterday at theRochester show and he had them.
Mine has a $40 price tag on it.

Tell Dave I sent ya!
Regards,
Dale
