John Naka Bonsai Techniques - Where to get the books cheap?

Well it's tax season again! And this year due to the recent addition to the family we are actually going to do quite well. So, when the federal government returns some of my hard-earned money, I thought I'd finally buy some of the books I've been wanting. But where is the best place to get them? I know I'm going to get Bonsai Techniques 1. So far the best price I've found with shipping is in the mid-forty-something dollar range. Does that sound about right? And it's on Ebay, believe it or not. Another thing, how good is Bonsai Techniques 2? There doesn't seem to be a lot of talk about that one, but I'm considering it as well. The price on it seems to be a bit more usually. And the third book I'd like is Jerry's Meislik's(sp?) Ficus: the Exotic Bonsai. I know that he has a website (I can't remember the address at the moment) but I don't remember seeing a direct link to buy the book on his site. Does anybody know a good place to get it?

I've moved your post to Books and down here there are various posts on Naka's bonsai techniques. I remember a recent one suggesting bonsaimonk.com as a source.

There are also some discussions about the value of the two books. Have a look if you don't get a meaningful response.

The link to Jerry's book is very prominent on his page
http://www.bonsaihunk.8m.com/ from there you can scroll down to the bottom for sources, or a link for for US orders

Regards,

Matt

Eminart,

Try eBay for the Naka books. I've seen them go on there for about $30 a throw.

All the best,

Aaron

I was going to suggest eBay. Another possibility, although much more tentative, is your club's auction, if they have one. We got a first edition with an autographed piece of paper inside for a good price at a club auction last year.

Another source is dallasbonsai.com. Jerrys book can be found evrywhere. I don't mean to distract you from the the two fine books by John Naka. But I would also recommend a very good book IMO, Bonsai Its Art, Science, History, and Philosophy by Deborah Koreshoff

Thanks Treebay, I didn't realize this site had a "books" section. And thanks for the links to Jerry's site. I'm enjoying my little ficus a lot and from all I've heard this is one of the best books on the species.

Sauce, yeah I've heard good things about that book too. I was already considering adding it to the list if I don't go over budget with the three I've already listed.

So, what about the "Bonsai Techniques 2"? Does anybody have anything good or bad to say about it? Is it just basically a more in-depth look into techniques?

Thanks everybody,

scott

Scott, I have both books. I can't say that I'd necessarily recommend Bonsai Techniques II, but I never regretted buying it. Both books are like a loosely arranged collection of articles and notes more than anything. I bought mine from BonsaiMonk. I think the Bonsai Learning Center also had them. You should be able to search with Google and find several vendors. The disadvantage of eBay (to me) is that many of the books offered there are used.
Good luck,
zube

You can get these for mid forties at the American Bonsai Society home page.

http://www.absbonsai.org/books/booklist.html

Your money will support that organization's efforts--which includes publication of new bonsai books.

Bonsai Techniques II is better than I, if you're advancing. It contains information on less straightforward topics like pot selection, more detailed design techniques, etc.

By the way, both books weren't meant to be books, really. The first is a collection of Naka's articles that were distributed at club meetings way back when. They are not the best articles to follow when it comes to plant care and some cultivation techniques...The books' strengths are in their ability to teach about design and trees.
