Hello,
Ive heard great things about both of these books. Does anyone know if all of his 1st book is included in his second? Or if I get only the second one, will I be missing crucial info he stated in his first book? Im mainly interested in collecting, initial shaping, plant physiology, winter care. Im not interested in displaying, or competitive showing. Do you think 1 or 2 would be better for me? I mainly enjoy deciduous trees, Does Naka speak much on deciduous trees in either of these books? I hear the 2nd one has more diagrams, are these on upper level fine detail work, or are these diagrams on the intial trunk shaping etc.. thank you, potatochip man |

You might check out this thread:
http://forum.bonsaitalk.com/showthread.php?t=7766 and there are some others that come up in "related threads" at the bottom of the page. It really depends on your current skill level. Bonsai Techniques One is a great primer. Vol II is more about putting those techniques into practice and drawing inspiration from natural trees. Regards, Matt P.S. the "Articles" section is for articles about bonsai.

Whatever you get you better act fast! I recently received Bonsaimonk.com's catalog which listed Bonsai Techniques 1 for 28$. So I got real excited and jumped on the website to order where sadly it was marked as being 38$. Then I emailed them asking about the price difference and they said, "Actually they're both wrong, it's now 40$". Man, I would have scooped it up quick. Oh well, I gues this about the going rate for it anyway.

Potato chip man,
I am very new to bonsai and was fortunate enough to receive both volume 1 and 2 for my birthday (what a wonderfull wife!). Though I have not read volume 2 completely, I agree that volume 1 seems to be more of an overview of bonsai with very practical information and volume 2 is more specific and includes advanced techniques that can make your trees great. If money allows, I would recomend getting both books... If you are very new and looking for a primer and some very applicable advice get volume 1... If you have advanced more and understand the basics of soil preperation, horticulture, etc. then get volume 2 and learn more of the advanced techniques that are specific to bonsai. I hope this helps, Matt |
