A Fun Find: Modern Bonsai
Hello everyone,
I found a fun book the other day, browsing through a Japanese-language bookstore here in Seattle. Has anyone seen this one? Below I provide a brief review, with a few sample pictures provided under fair use. -Carl

It's basically one big picture book. Hundreds of beautifully photographed trees, all done with fairly soft diffuse light against white backgrounds. In addition to the usual collection of Bonsai Today gallery quality photographs of conifers and broadleafs, the book has a wonderful set of flowering and fruiting bonsai. Here are two:

Not only are individual trees pictured, but the book also has page after page of (semi-)formal displays.

Do you know what kind of trees those are? The purple one is amazing(the pot looks great).
I just started bonsai about 5 months ago and i bought a 3-4 year old pyracantha from nursery, cant wait to see its orange fruit this fall!

It even has an extensive kusamono section! I was intrigued to see that many of these were displayed in relatively formal pots, compared with the organic forms I'm used to seeing from Wolfgang Putz and similar artists.
All in all, a fun book to look through. Almost no text, whatsoever, but nonetheless the book provides a lot of ideas for display, pot choice, and photography. The flowering tree, fruiting tree, and kusamono sections show a large number of trees in styles that we see less often here in the English-speaking literature. With my best regards, Carl

I'm afraid I only know the common names. The book provides those in English (and for some trees, but not these, the latin names are provided as well). The top is beautyberry; the bottom is winterberry. -Carl

Nice find Carl!! I always admire looking at pictures because after every picture I look at, it broadens my choices of styling and inspiration.
