A feast for the eyes as well as the spirit!

I found a bonsai book that excites me! Actually this one emphasizes tray landscapes and plantings on manmade rock.

If you're a died-in-the-wool bonsai traditionalist, this book may not appeal to you, but if you enjoy forest and saikei plantings which combine a variety of plants including trees, accent plantings, grasses and moss, this one is for you!

Follow along on 20 miniature landscape projects, creating plantings on a variety of substrates, including wood, fiberglas and "ciment fondu." This book is lavishly illustrated with design plans, clear instructions, how-to cartoon illustrations, and finished photos for each. A plant directory will get you thinking about using new species, like sedum, bamboo, saxifrega, and various dwarf thymes in your plantings. Learn how to incorporate stonework, mosses, groundcover, shrubs and trees to create colorful and realistic plantings.

Ledges, cliffs and stonework are constructed with chickenwire and fiberglas, or Ciment Fondu (a mixture available from Mason supply houses and planted with a variety of tree species, such as Flowering Cherry, Crabapple, Japanese Maple, Juniper and Cotoneaster.

If you have an interest in saikei or tray plantings, pick this one up at Amazon.

I have a chunk of Feather Rock already picked out for my next stone landscape!

Regards,

Matt

It is by far the most worn out book I have, it traveled with me everywhere for almost two monthes. I'll be building a fountain saikel this spring.

I agree completely about the book.

Just be warned that these projects all seem to involve the use of trees that have been in training for a few years.

No instant gratification here!
