books for beginner

HELP!!my husband just bought my son (18yrs) a bonsai of what species we don't know. Indoor/outdoor, sun, shade, pinch verses cut etc. What book or books would you suggest which would have good illustration so that we can first identify it and also the best ways to take care of it? Thanks!!

Re: books for beginner

there's a book called The Bonsai Survival Manual by Colin Lewis that tells you a bit about the tree and its needs as well as full colour photos. It's very handy.

Re: books for beginner

I would also recommend The Bonsai Survival Manual by Colin Lewis. I have it and refer to it quite often. Acouple of more that I would recommend would be:
Bonsai for Beginners by Craig Cousins
The Living Art of Bonsai : Principles & Techniques of Cultivation & Propagation by Amy Liang

Both of these are very informative books as well.

Re: books for beginner

Lucy,
Great advice from the bonsai folks above. Let me put in a plug for my first book and still a great one. Bonsai Techniques #1 By John Y. Naka, My personal hero.
Glad to hear of your son's interest in Bonsai, a great hobby for a family to do together!

Lucy: If you want to get the most bang for your buck, most every hardware and home store has a Sunset how-to book section. Look for Sunset Magazine's book called "Bonsai" you will get a world of basic information for under ten dollars. Also it is very easy to find.
Best of luck......ripsgreentree
