Huh? Best books to get?

Good day everyone ,

My Birthday is coming up and my father wants to know what I want. I was thinking about getting some bonsai books. What are the best ones to get?

Thanks,
- Misspeled_Name

I think Bonsai by Harry Tomlinson is a good choice for a beginers book.Includes a species list with bios aswell as styling and seasonal care.If you look into this one try to get the harback version as the paerback isn't as complete.

How about a year's subscription to Bonsai Today? The gift that gives all year!

I started reading when I was but a bonsai noob, and at first it was WAAAYY beyond me, but it helped raise my sights right quick. They cover a couple basics in every issue and also show very advanced stuff.

Rather than a book, you might consider tools or something else. I'm sticking my neck out here, but I think that there is enough information on the internet that you don't need beginner books. Advanced books, yes, when you get to that point. But for a beginner, this forum and other internet sites can supply everything you need to know if you take the time to look for it and read it.

I would disagree a little with the Naka books... some of the techniques and horticultural information is dated, and some is specific to So. Calif. Just my opinion!

The subscription to Bonsai Today is a great idea, although as Pootsie says the techniques are very advanced and sometimes confusing. They are also often specific to the climate and timing of Japan. You have to know your own climate before you take them literally! ( the same holds true for books from other countries...)

If you don't have good branch cutters, or concave cutters, or wire... that may be a good gift!

That is a good idea . I think I will be better off with books though, I like the layout of a book more than a mag.

Thanks,

Where can you get a subscription to this mag? I have never seen it in any stores. Do they have a website?

I agree with the poots that a magazine subscription would be a great gift idea, and something you can look forward to!

90% of the bonsai books available cover only 10% of the material.
  • Bonsai Today is great for inspiration and practical knowledge. The Galleries and Restyling are inspirational. They've recently begun a series of beginner articles under the odd name "If you care" but the content is quite useful.
  • International Bonsai has more advanced information that you will come to appreciate for its in-depth reviews of specific topics and species. They're a great reference that will increase in value as your own skills evolve.

Matt

If you are intent on getting a book I would highly recommend Bonsai Its Art, Science, History and Philosophy by Deborah R. Koreshoff. This in IMO is an excellent book. I would also agree with Matt and Pootsie regarding Bonsai Today magazine.
