I like (and have) all the books listed above but unless Im mistaken I didnt see any one mention Bonsai with Japanese Maples by Peter Adams. I think this is a good reference for j maples

The one I like for DESIGN is Basic Bonsai Design by David De Groot. Never met the man, but the book is great...he is the curator of the Weyerhaeuer Company's Pacific Rim Bonsai Collection in Washington (state). Pat

I think if you're a beginner you're better off following the established rules until you have enough experience to know how and when to bend them to your own end and thus develop your own style. After all if it wasn't for such rules there'd be a lot more sticks in pots and instant bonsai.

I do like Brent's rules, they are super helpful, but I would love to see the rules in "action" as it were. Pictures are worth a thousand words, etc. And I just like looking at pretty trees  I added "Bonsai School" and "Bonsai Handbook" to my wishlist  I can't wait for the other Craig Cousins book I just got to come in. |
