The one I like for DESIGN is Basic Bonsai Design by David De Groot. Never met the man, but the book is great...he is the curator of the Weyerhaeuer Company's Pacific Rim Bonsai Collection in Washington (state). Pat

Thats i handy link for beginners in bonsai,i think i should post that up on a gardening site i visit. They keep asking me how to make bonsai and when i tell them there are rules and they may have to wait years to get a bonsai from scratch they get stuffy with me

I personally do not believe in RULES for Bonsai I do believe in Guidelines. If you follow these rules you end up with 123 so elementary

I think if you're a beginner you're better off following the established rules until you have enough experience to know how and when to bend them to your own end and thus develop your own style. After all if it wasn't for such rules there'd be a lot more sticks in pots and instant bonsai.

Thanks! Although, I can't find that book on Amazon or Ebay, so I have a feeling it's going to be hard to get my hands on if it isn't in either of those two places! I do like Brent's rules, they are super helpful, but I would love to see the rules in "action" as it were. Pictures are worth a thousand words, etc. And I just like looking at pretty trees ![]() I added "Bonsai School" and "Bonsai Handbook" to my wishlist I can't wait for the other Craig Cousins book I just got to come in. |
