Where can I get software for making virtuals?

Just a reminder that anyone can download one of the best drawing/virtualizing/photo processing programs out there, for free.

The Gimp (The GNU Image Processing Program) is a free graphics program preferred by many artists to Photoshop itself. It's also what I use to do all my virtuals.

Originally written for the Linux platform, the Gimp now runs on Windows as well, and works beautifully. Here's a place to
get the Windows version. Alternatively, to get a pre-built install package take a look at the GimpWin Installer Page. Read the directions carefully, and it should be relatively straightforward from there.

A fantastic book on using the Gimp is now available for free on the web: Grokking the Gimp.

Doing virtuals isn't all that hard once you get going with this software.

All the best,
Old Mister

Great idea! Here are some more suggestions:

1) You can also download a 30-day evaluation of paintshop pro from http://www.jasc.com

That should get you through the contest, at least.

2) If you are running a windows based system, you can probably click and drag the photo from the forum right to your paint software program and drop it on the open window or the icon, and it should open up in there. Not sure about mac.

Otherwise right click on it and use "save-as"

Regards,

Matt

You're right, stp - the problem is Windows XP. The good news is that the people who did the conversion Windows are also doing a conversion to XP. While a final release version is not out yet, there is a version already available for testing. See wingimp.org for details.

Best regards,
OMC

Help!

OK - I know you use the clone brush (I have JASC paint shop Pro 7) and I know you need to find some leaves to clone across...
Can you offer any tips about finding images to "clone" and like that? It says in the book that you need to find "equal color depth" - how do you determine this?

I can't believe I am even trying this!

Leesa, I'm not sure on your software, but what I do is import another pic of a tree to the pallete. I put the tree right on the other image in a corner. I use the cloaning target on the second picture, build my tree, and then just paint out the small tree, voila!

Hope that makes sense, Bonsaial

If you are using PSP (paint shop pro) You can clone from one photo to another without actually merging them together. Just open two files, arrange your windows so they are tiled horizontally or vertically, Select the clone/rubberstamp tool, and mark your origin (right click in PSP; and probably alt-click or option-click for mac in photoshop) then start cloning right into the other window.

Here's another trick - paint or clone on a different image layer. Then you can erase the foliage or newly added branches without affecting the trunk underneath.

OOps I forgot to answer Leesa's question. The color depth thing is easy. Usually you don't have to worry about it, but in order to copy from one image, just make sure they are both JPEG images and you should be okay. GIFs have a maximum of 256 colors. so if you tried to clone from a JPEG which has a lot more, to a GIF it would complain. If you do want to borrow from a GIF anyway, just convert by going to Colors->Increase Color Depth->16 million colors (24 bit) and you should be okay.

Regards,

Matt
