Sound Off Need Data to Preload Database Reference Tables

Good News! This is a significant sign of progress!

I've released a new version of the system. It is completely empty of meaningful data, however.

I need people to take responsibility for downloading the current test release and loading data for the following reference tables:

Acquisition Sources
Bonsai Styles
Container Types
Fertilizers
Soil Components
Tree Genus

Sound Off Botanist Wannabe's Needed

Once we've got the Tree Genus table loaded, the Tree Species table will be loadable. I plan on having that done very soon. I need the (new?) related fixed list items first.

Then, I need people to volunteer to input species information for one or more genus.

Sound Off Compressed Database Files

As a gesture of mercy to those who may still be using dial-up (!) I have compressed the database files into one zip file. The current release is http://home.comcast.net/~BrianP03103/BMS_V0.2.zip

Clicking on the URL above should start the download. If not, please let me know.

Thanks.

Unhappy Volunteers?

I've gotten someone to volunteer to load the Tree Genus table. No one has claimed any of the others.

Come on, people, this is being done for you, pro bono. All I ask is some cooperation and feedback. Getting either (with a few very notable exceptions) has been like pulling teeth. If you want this effort to continue, if you want this system to be available for your usage (for free!), you've got to contribute your efforts, too.

So choose - help, or lose the software.

OK, you'll have to forgive my ignorance. What do you mean by load a table? As in send you a list of what should be in it? Or do we have to do programming?

I am SO sorry! I fell into techie-speak! MY BAD!

In the strictest sense, it means, "To provide specific information to fill one of a collection of data storage units."

I need you to download and install the database, type stuff into a database form and save it as you go. In the process, you'll also be testing the forms. I would like you to tell me what you think, and where you think (and what) improvement is warranted. When you're done, email the database back to me.

Absolutely no programming is involved. You are using the new software in the same manner you would when it is released, but I seek you to be responsible to inputting specific information.

So pick one of the subjects above (Genus is already taken), and volunteer to be responsible for providing meaningful information for it.

I hope that that is clearer.

Thank You for having the courage to speak out and point out my lack of clarity!

Bug MS-Access Run-Time Download

Thought that I should reiterate the location of the MS-Access Runtime download URL:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/243957

You'll need that to run the database if you don't already have Access installed.

FWIW, the database if developed using Access 2003. If that leaves you asking, "What?", don't worry, it is irrelavent for you.

Dude - you are my new hero. Seriously. I can only imagine how much effort you have put in to this project. I am out of the loop as a Mac user and that's my loss. I would consider running Windows via boot camp or parallels but that isn't going to happen. Not to go off on a rant or insult you but I can't do the Microsoft thing at all. I wanted to at least post and let you know this project is as close as I have come to seriously considering the options.

Thanks - from someone who will never use it.

PS - I especially like the "So choose - help, or lose the software" line. I laughed out loud - not in jest but as that can be my attitude sometimes.

Travel ZipGenius

For those of you who (for some reason) don't have proper Zip (compressed) file handling software, here is the download location for the software I use. It is freeware, and works very well.
