Getting Started
Hello Y’all
I very very new to the world of Bonsai . Now that I’m retried and it is too hot to go fishing in La. I have a little time this summer and would like to devote time to learning about and starting this great hobby. I dug out a small book I bought in 1961 but not enough information to get started . The Peter Chan book BONSIA has great pictures some information. The whole thing is still confusing as to how to start . There are a great many tree growing wild near the house ,in the woods and in the lake. This a very shot list of the hardy and very common species. 1. Taxodium distichun Many thousands of 1” to 3” trees just coming up on the lake shore. 2. Liquidambar styraciflua Coming up in the veggie garden. 3. Ulmus alata 4. Querus Over 40 variety growing wild in the area. I also have some nursery Junipers and Box Woods . What is the first step? I have all the above in pots with the exception of the Querus. Do the long tap root of the seedlings I will have to start these from seed this fall. Help Don G. |

"What is the first step?"
Read, read, google search, read, forum search, read then ask more questions. You have some species that would work for bonsai growing around you. You know the Id's so that is a good start. Before dugging learn when to dug the tree and what to do with it afterwards. You can do pre-training while the tree is still in the ground, chops, pruning and wiring. With a good established root system the recovery and growth on top will be good. Horticulture first because you can't style a dead tree. During your searches and reading look at a lot of pictures of bonsai. You'll start to get an idea of what you like and what you don't. Then look at them with the tree you have in mind and ask yourself "Can my tree be made to look like this one?" Once you have these two areas of knowledge you will be well on your way. good luck and enjoy the journey walt |
