Bonsai Software

I am a student studying software development. I had an idea the other day. All the bonsai records programs I have seen are kinda weak. Does anyone here use this software? Are there any things you would like them to do that they don't? Would enough of you use bonsai software if I wrote a program for one? For one, I think the use of Access as a database is kind of overkill for the application. Plus, you have to own or buy Access to use most of the software I've seen. I've got a few ideas I think would make a great bonsai program.

Re: Bonsai Software

I don't use bonsai database software myself. Something about scrawling notes in a journal with messy hands and then running back inside to record data on the computer doesn't seem too user friendly.

I have enough difficulty keeping my camera dry and clean.

I can see where it might help you manage a business. Make sure you don't sell trees for less than you invested, but I find bonsai to be a money and time losing proposition anyway.

No sense getting fleeced, though.

There's a survey of some available software packages in bonsaiTALK Links -> Suppliers -> Software

Re: Bonsai Software

Hey Sub,
Gotta to agree with you. I just use photoimpact and when I take pis of my trees I just add a little note telling me when it was repotted, when the pic was taken,my goals, and what style it is striving for. Then when my puter starts getting full I store on a zip and put in storage.
For what its worth

Re: Bonsai Software

Well, one of the enhancements, I was thinking about was having a user contributed library of info that was accessable from a server to the program. Tips, caresheets, and stuff like that would be accessable to people who used the program. This would be in addition to its bonsai database capablilties and any other ideas I had. Its just a brainstorm I had. Its all still a vague concept without a lot of form.

Re: Bonsai Software

Hello folks...
In my humble opinion, this Bonsaitalk BBS is the "software" that we like and use and can handle. If one would want to share his/her experiences with others - this is the place. I can't think of any better software and with the help of Matt - ahum; Mr. Treebay - we all keep it going...
Staying humble, staying nice to each other and for all trying to be helpfull.
Regards,
Eric

Re: Bonsai Software

Eric,
Sorry, I didn't mean to encroach upon this community Matt has developed. What I was planning would not have taken the place of this forum. It was to be a database for your own knowledge of your bonsai and their development/care over the years. Along with that was a library of caresheets that would have been a permanent searchable database. It seems most of your contributers feel they have no need for this anyway. So, rest easy. I was merely trying to be of help to others, not to hinder this forum.

Re: Bonsai Software

I will probably still develop this software, but it will not be a top priorirty of mine. I will let everyone know when I have the first version ready sometime on the future.
