Still wondering why
1. Developers persist in reinventing the wheel and building dedicated apps for this sort of task every time.
2. Why in this day and age build an application for a single platform

It is after all a Database, and some front end / user interface to it. There are many free / open source Database engines around so why bother creating something anew. Just Pick a DB backend that is cross platform, and write the front end in a Web browser code of choice. Perl, php, html whatever and so long as the relevant software bits are installed it will work on any platform.

Just my 2c worth

Ken

Hi Ken,

I guess the reason I built applications for the Mac only is because I feel I can do much more making it mac only then if I had to try to make it cross platform.

I am aware of the cross platform solutions that are available using some kind of database backend with a web browser front end, and if I was interested in targetting the most number of users possible then this is probably the way I would go. However, I am more interested in making a really nice looking application and my chosen platform is the Mac as I believe I can do far more cool things on my Mac than an alternative platform.

As for reinventing the wheel... yes, there are other bonsai management apps out there and the idea of managing a group of trees is nothing new but the way in which they are managed is what makes things different.

There are lots of apps out there that manage bonsai trees already, but none of them really have all the features I want.

I'm a Mac user, and I want the traditional 'Mac experience' when using whatever software I choose.
i.e.
- A consistent (and nice) user interface
- A fast way of searching ANY of the information about my trees
- A cool way of browsing the images of my trees, think 'CoverView' mode in iTunes for music.
- I think it would be cool to be able to use my trees + their information as a screensaver, or maybe an animated desktop picture that changes randomly.
- Export my tree information in many formats. Rich text, Pdf, tab delimetered, heck why not even as a HTML gallery that I can then upload to a webserver for other people to look at.
- Integration with iPhoto.
- Integration with current websites, Wikipedia has a lot of information on different bonsai species. Why not use that information?

There are a lot of reasons I choose to use a Mac, and even more reasons why I choose to develop for the Mac only. I can offer a much more exciting user experience by leveraging the power that developing on the Mac offers.

cheers,

Home-done management

Our computer runs Windows XP Home edition, and for the present I'm in no rush to Vista. (XP does what we want and Vista is still being refined.)

I have created a few database files to keep track of my bonsai information. But I would be very interested in an integrated application usable in Windows XP, available on CD for a reasonable price.

If anyone knows of such, please send me a PM with further info.

Thanks much!
