Exclamation Ethnic Slurs and Epithets

The use of ethnic slurs and epithets on bonsaiTALK is not permitted.

Please note that posters may not be aware that a specific term is considered an ethnic slur and may be objectionable to some readers. In the event you see a post that contains a term that you consider objectionable, please report the post to a moderator using the button that appears beneath the poster's name.

For your reference, here is a partial list of such terms:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ethnic_slurs

Language is a controversial issue, and much depends on context and intent, which is very difficult to infer from a forum post. It is for this is the reason that we recommend that you report the post rather than taking public action. You are certainly welcome to offer a (Private Message) PM to the concerned party that points out this policy.

Regards,

Matt

Matt,

While the intention behind your post is appreciated, personally I had never even experienced a large proportion of the terms that you posted, yet alone their connotations.

Can we please, rather, introduce a policy of simply replying to any poster who one takes issue with, on any of these imotive grounds, in person rather than public first? If that person then refuses to acknowledge the offence accidentally caused, and restrain from using such terminology on the forum in future, then it can be resolved in other ways. What is offensive to one person, is not necessarily offensive to another and some of these terms have deep cultural connotations either way, that others may not realise or be aware of.

Regards,

Fish.

Fish I am not sure you've read the policy.

If you read the policy, it suggests that someone report the post to a moderator (which is a private process) or respond to the poster by PM (which is a private process) and it notes that usage may be unintentional.

If you still have an issue with the policy please reply by PM. The policy was not posted for debate.

Regards,

Matt
