PIPECLEANER BONSAI CONTEST OFFICIAL RULES!

The bonsaiTALK Community's Pipe Cleaner Bonsai Contest will be open to any and all participants in the bonsaiTALK Community who are members in good standing as of the contest opening date August 1, 2006. The contest will end one month later, NOW SEPTEMBER 20, 2006. The objective of the contest is to provide a means for the members of bonsaiTALK Community to capture the spiritual essence of the bonsai art - without using any bonsai!

1. ELIGIBILITY
  • Each member can enter as often as he or she wishes. However, the entries must be distinct - not the same entry with modifications!. And please note: any single entry may be rejected on the basis of unsuitability for public display. (We're covering our bases here.)
  • Anyone can enter - members or mods. We'll either choose our judges from non-participants or use some type of popular voting scheme.
2. HOW TO ENTER
  • Entries will be made by photograph. You'll enter by opening a new thread for each "tree" in the Pipecleaner Bonsai Contest Forum and attaching your photos. Click here, to start a new thread.
  • Photographic entries should be at least 500 pixels on the larger axis. Bigger is better. In rare circumstances we might ask you to re-photograph your tree "because we know you can do better."
  • EMAIL ENTRIES ARE ACCEPTABLE - If you have difficulty getting your entry formatted properly or want to send a more detailed photo, we'll also accept emailed photos. Email them to pipecleaner2006@bonsaiTALK.com
  • You can include a maximum of four photos of each display. As a minimum, you'll include one photo showing the entire plant. Optionally you could include alternate views or close-ups.
  • No Photoshopping/virtuals permitted! Previously published photos (Internet or print, are not eligible.)
  • Photographic entries will become the property of bonsaiTALK.com to use as we see fit. (You can keep the plant).
3. ELEMENTS
  • In the spirit of artificial bonsai, the tree must be composed of strictly non-bonsai elements. No branches, twigs, foliage or bark of any tree or shrub, living or dead, may be used in the presentation, even if covered or obscured by other materials.
  • Pipe cleaners (or chenille stems) should figure prominently in the construction of the fauxsai. We're willing to accept trunks that incorporate other elements - like bonsai wire, aluminum foil or papier-mache, but the judges are looking to see the creative use of pipe cleaners in the construction of your "plant" Whether it be foliage, twigs or trunks.
  • Googly Eyes are acceptable. You may mix elements with the display - beads, pasta, paper bits, but the use of the trunk, branches, foliage or bark of actual trees and shrubs are strictly prohibited. Nor can you include manufactured materials intended to resemble or depict living plants (like silk flora or plastic plants). That would be cheating!
4. PRESENTATION -
  • You may use a "real" pot, soil and/or moss in your presentation. You are encouraged to display and photograph your creation in a suitable setting.
  • The use of traditional accent pieces, stones, scrolls and stands are acceptable. Mudmen may be used as accessories in the final photographic display as thematic elements. With the exception of the Humor & Thematic categories, judges' emphasis will be heavily weighted toward the quality of the fauxsai itself and less on these compositional elements.
  • If your bonsai has a theme or concept, please describe it in 25 words or fewer. Please include the height of your finished work. Also let us know what materials were used, in a sentence or two.
5. PRIZES & JUDGING

Seven prizes will be awarded. See the PRIZE THREAD for details

A. THREE PEOPLE'S CHOICE AWARDS

Shortly after the Entry Period ends (September 20, 2006 at Midnight Pacific Time) you'll be able to vote for your favorites in our online gallery. The highest rated trees in the first, second and third places will receive prize bundles of bonsai tools, books and magazines.

B. FOUR SPECIAL CATEGORY PRIZES

A special panel will choose from among the entries for top prizes in each of the following categories. Three panelists will be selected from among those who did not place entries in this contest.
  • most Realistic
  • most Creative
  • most Humorous
  • best Theme (e.g., Literati, or Forest, or Winter)

What are pipe cleaners?

Pipe cleaners are a utilitarian object that sort of found its own following as a craft item, like popsicle sticks. Pipe cleaners were twisted bits of wire that had some flocking trapped between the twists. They were originally used for cleaning the stems of smoking pipes (hence the name) but over time they became popular for crafting, and were made in a variety of colors.

If there is a craft store in your area (Michael's Crafts or Joanne Fabric Store) you can probably find pipe cleaners. They usually cost about a nickel each. You can find them in natural shades or assortments. I found some assortments containing mostly greens and browns, about 50 pieces for $3.

Or you could also try Ebay

Or Amazon
