Al Keppler, Internationaly known bonsai artist was seen early today while shopping at local Michael's Craft Store. Seen in his basket were numerous packages of brilliantly colored chenille stems. Brown and green were very prominent, but, many packages of pink, purple and yellow were also present. Speculation as to maybe a boug or azalea could be in the offing.

Also spotted in the shopping cart was two yards of snake skin fabric and two yards of alligator rope. We can only venture a guess as to what the eccentric artist has in mind with this.

Later that day....Keppler was also spotted at the local bonsai nursery purchasing a new pot. This could only mean one thing. Keppler could be entering the well publicised faux bonsai contest at bonsaiTALK. This could be very big. Updates to follow as this reporter follows new leads*

Maybe a popularvote can be made where everybody can give 1,2,3....10 points only once, so 10 "trees" can be rated. That will possibly be the 10 you like best. Than there isnt a problem that some-one gives only 10s, 9s and 8s on all trees.

There will be a more distincted difference between the trees in this way, I hope.

Maybe you will take this into consideration.

Thanks, Wessel

Good point, Wessel. I have a couple to raise as well:
  • Is it possible that we may drag the Art of Bonsai into the smelly and not-at-all desirable realm of Craft by staging such a competition?
  • Once the popular vote is made, do we have some experts on the topic of 'faux Bonsai' ('Fauxsai') to make the final judgement?
  • Does anybody have any spare googly eyes? (I will trade Melamine particle board offcuts for googly eyes, on a weight/weight basis.)

Thanks.

FlyBri.

How about everynbody gets a single vote in each category? I'm sure this would be a lot simpler than giving everybody free reign with their votes. That way a clear public favourite could emerge in each category.

Almost forgot,

If its possible I would recomment that names of the contestants aren't reveilled, like in last article contest. Some people dont want to give a friend a bad rating or just give their friends/bonsaiteachers only high ratings even if the Fauxsai is average. (friendspolitics we call that in Holland).

Maybe this could be taken in consideration aswell.

As for the prices, I want to donate a small pot (incl. shipping) or $15 for the overall nr 1,2 or 3. (in winners/bonsaitalk PayPal account)

Wessel

And I will donate a $10 gift certificate to Stone Lantern.
(Actually, two $5 certificates, but that sounds funny.)

I'll donate a lava rock pot, roughly 4"wide, 2"deep and 4" tall. potting areas are about 1"x1" 2" deep and small 1"x1" 1/2" pocket. will edit with pic tomorrow.

and also, Is there a price limit? I mean, usually these contests have price limits. just wondering.

but I'm in either way!

i agree with weejik on his idea on anonimity, i think it is very important to keep the artist secret till the winner is revealed as many will not vote fair and just try to help their freinds or give a low grade because they dont like the person

That's a tall order, cuase I think you're supposed to post a thread with your tree, errhh um fuzzy bonsai like thing. and then it's not such a secret as to who's it is.

but I think if you use the system where you can only give a 1, 2, 3, 4, etc once will do a great deal in making the judging more determinite.

oh, and did someone say g°°gy eyes!?! that's silly!
