Virtual Bonsai Design Contest

Update: VOTE HERE For your favorite!

After a brief hiatus, I spent some time coming up with something fun. I spent about 3 hours taking all the branches and foliage off of five gorgeous trees. Well they are not gorgeous anymore.

The task?
Design a tree with just a trunk to start with. Add branches anywhere you like. Remember this will be judged. Use sound bonsai practises when applying the branches. The foliage can be applied any way that you like. It should also follow certain design rules that would be appropriate. In some cases I have left a small tuft of foliage to help speed things up, on some you will have to import foliage in and then erase it when done with the plant. Bonus- Add a stand if you like, how bout an accent plant? Remember, judging. Heck put it in a tokonoma if you have a picture of one. Bonus points apply.

The Trees?
Click here to return to the contest index, where you'll find each tree in its own message thread, 1 through 5.

Rules?
There are no rules. This will be a judged event, so it would make sense to follow traditional rules of bonsai design.

The Judge?
Who else did you think? I will judge the event. It will be posted in five catorgories. I will pick a winner in each catagory. The winner in each catagory will have their tree posted side by side with the original tree. Not that I hope they look the same, but it will be interesting to see how they differ.

The Prize?
From the five winners, a grand prize winner will be selected with the help of Matt Chroust. The winner will recieve a Custom Built Shohin Stand, by yours truly. Have no shohin? Hey, They make excellent accent plant stands too! Picture to follow before contest ends.

bonsaiTALK will pay shipping.

Ending Date?
Contest will run through Oct. 31. At that time the contest is over. Judging will start on Nov. 1. No exceptions here. One tree per person per catagory, so make it a good one before you post.

Need virtual software?

Never fear. This is where you get to play valuable player. We need critiques along the way. This is to be a learning experience for all. This is what will make this fun.

Good luck, and have fun! Bonsaial

Al,
Did you really cut all the foliage off of these trees or did you get rid of it by way of a virtual and then start with that image? Please tell me you didn't really cut it all off.

If you did, what do you plan to do with them now?

BTW, I enjoyed the contests very much and hope to see more. It's posts like yours that make bonsaiTalk such an interesting place to visit.

Thanks,
