Finalist Tree No. 3 Cascade
Treebeard from UK
Very nice foliage detail. The shdows in the foliage are awesome. The shape of the canopy is in harmony with the trunk. I would like to see this tree with the right branch in the same position on the left. I think the flow of the trunk line is to the left. The right branch is not distracting though, and it comes together to present a wonderful tree. Runner up, Karl Thier. This is a wonderful tree also. I like the foliage. I am not sure what kind it is, but I like it. I think the original tree was a kadsura. The use of the root stand really elevated this tree from the ordinary. The backdrop and shadow effect are not so busy as some of the other Karl entrys. Stephentoddpope, Nice effort but..... With a trunk with no taper, one has to treat it like a bunjin tree. Less is more. The array of branches you included look out of place on a trunk with no taper. The design begs for a bunjin crown. Harry, I said less is more... but not this much less... This one drew a couple of really amazing entries, Treebeard's and Karl's. Rene also hit the nail on the head in terms of design.
Those two were posted before I even started working on this tree - and I found that there was absolutely nothing I could do to improve on either of them. While many of Karl's backgrounds have more detail than I like, the root stand is terrific. The shadow, though something of a classic Photoshop effect, works nicely in this case. (And is a hell of a lot nicer than the shadows I was able to add in my virtuals!) But I can see why the judges ended up choosing Treebeard's entry - the movement back under the stand balances the tree beautifully! Excellent job on that one. All the best, Carl / Old Mister Crow
