Building The Contest Stand

I decided, what the hay, I might as well post the stand under construction just like the trees under construction. I went to my local secret wood procurement place and found a wonderful surprise. A piece of African Mahogany burl. This piece of wood is gorgeous. The grain is all wavy and the wood has some tiger eye effect. I decided on a stand at 6"x10". I made it a little longer than usual to accomodate an oval pot, in case anyone has one that wins. The stand will be in the formal look. simple top with grooved legs and a stretcher bar with dowels. Very similar to the stand that I use under the green rock that I wanted to grind.

These are the pieces cut out for the top.

I build my stands with biscuits. No, not the ones in the morning slopped with gravy. These are beechwood biscuits that swell up with the glue and make really strong joints. I have people ask me, "why do you use biscuits on such a small stand". Well.. I like um strong. A long time ago I made some of my first stands. I did not have a biscuit cutter and so did not use them. I had some plants in a three day show. The plants got watered, and the water ran out of the pot and onto the stand. The corners swelled up and popped the joints. Pretty embarassing. Ever since then I use biscuits on all my joinery.

Cutting biscuit slots.

With all the slots cut, it is time for some glue up. I use a dark brown carpenter's glue with resin. I spread a lot on; it's much easier to clean up some squeezed out glue than to have a joint fail. The key to using biscuits is to get a lot of glue into the slot. When the joint is squeezed in the clamp the joint will hydraulic and not come together all the way. That way the joint does not squeeze out all the glue.

Spreadin' it on, just like bonsaiTALK

The top all glued and clamped up.

Tomorrow I will work on the legs and run the top through the planer to bring it down to the correct thickness. I figure about 1/2" thick will be just right. I have to run the leg stick through the shaper to put the grooves in and run the edge of the top though just to get the groove in the edge...

Be back tomorrow

So far everything has been going ahead as planned, no glitches. I ran the glued up top through the planer to take it down to the desired thickness.

Checking the blades for any nicks.

After all the parts have been cut out of rough stock, the get some passes through the planer to take off the saw marks. Once they are smooth, the leg piece will go throught the shaper to get a groove on the front and side of the leg.

Running the leg through the shaper.

Glitch number one. My wife calls me at 2:00 pm on my cell phone. "Honey, have you ever made a stand out of almond wood", well I have to tell her no, "why babe". She proceeds to tell me that she has ordered two cords of rough lumber for me to make stands out of. She told me just run it through that fricken 400.00 dollar planer you had to have. Think she was miffed when I bought it? Oh well, now I have something to do on Saturday. Stack firewood.

Once the firewood had been unloaded from the delivery trucks, I could resume work on the important stuff, like the stand. Once the leg stick had been shaped and sanded I cut 4- 1 3/4" legs.
This will make the stand 6"x10"x2 1/4" tall. Just about right.

All the major componets cut, shaped and sanded, ready for assembly.

I couldn't resist. I sprayed on one coat of lacquer, just to see what this wood was going to look like. I was amazed. The depth of the grain is amazing. When you rotate the piece, you get a tiger eye effect, just like quilted mahogany, but with the burl streaks in it. I think this is going to be a real piece of art.

Close up of the top.

Al, nice work as usual. That's some nice grain in the wood.
