Thanks for all the kind words.
STP, I bought that second tree about six or seven years ago. (The link above to my first post on this board will show you a picture of the tree back then; it was probably just a few years old at the time). I left it with my folks when I moved to Atlanta for three years, and then brought it up here to Seattle last year. It's still a tiny little thing, but the bark is getting nice and old and fissured. Right now, the canopy is a mess, but I'm hoping that I can clean up over the next couple of years. The other one is a korean hornbeam that I bought a year ago in a 2-gallon can, and moved to the pot you see it in as an intermediate. Next year, down to a smaller pot. Lots of work left to do on branch development. Oh, one other note. I don't actually leave that much moss on either tree - that was added just for the pictures and then removed straight away. Best regards, OMC

Thanks, stp!
Maybe it screams "tree" because its unkept canopy makes it seem naturalistic rather than bonsai-stylized. (I find that Hinoki cypress seem not to understand the basic aesthetic principles of bonsai - rather than respecting the proper development of foliage pads and canopy form, they are prone to die back when and where they want to. This one is no exception. This fall it picked a random smattering of branch tips and interior regions and cast them aside. ) On the positive side, this one has developed quite a nice nebari, here hidden by the moss that I placed to concel all the wire tie-downs holding it into its recovery pot. Cheers, Carl
