After the aggressive treatment at least 60% of these trees will not survive 3 months

Why?

Well in a lot of the more heavily wired trees, the act of wiring and picking through the foliage does damage to the cambium on the tree that is unable to repair during the winter, so that a lot of the foliage will dry out and die. The extensive pruning and carving that some of the contestants did will also cause the tree to dry out.

That's the whole point of proposing another contest, to judge in the future the way that the tree was worked on. If some of us went too far, and their branches or tree die, then that tree won't be represented. But some of us were more careful and only went as far as we felt we could.

So, anyone up for the idea of a contest to judge the progress of these trees next year?

Well Joanie, if the point is to have a long term contest and people were told that ahead of time, people would be more careful with their wiring. But since these were styling contests with cheap stock people were more liberal in their styling techniques.

Many of the past contest entries actually survived.

Keep in mind that a first styling is done sooner or later, the trick is to leave as much foliage as possible and still achieve a presentable design. Do not re-pot, and give excellent aftercare. Sure some will be lost but that can very well happen without a contest.

Contests are learning experiences, think of all the steps one has to go through to enter a tree....learning at every level.

Joanie, Why a contest? Just ask those who entered the previous contest to upload update photos of their trees.

Perhaps we should change the name from a Styling contest to a Cultivation contest?

Not always the case Will, often the trick is to remove a lot of foliage to allow air and light into the tree....this will cause prolific backbudding where its needed most for future development.

Arnie,

We should have been more species specific as we both can be correct on this point.

Maybe it's just me, but I cannot personally style ANY material - regardless of cost - without considering its chances of survival.

I'm not judging anyone else, but that is something I cannot do.
