Not a very good picture but you get a size comparison with the ONE FOOT ruler next to it.

Dale, that is an OLD Kingsville Based on the fact that a Kingsville can't be over 90 years old, how old do you think that one is?

Paul, when I was selling Kingsville Boxwoods, I bought my stock from Col. John Hinds, Ret. of Seattle. John was the major grower on the West Coast.

The Kingsville was discovered in 1914 by a nurseryman in Maryland, Sam Appleby as sports on a Korean boxwood. Sam had the presence of mind to propagate these sports, and that is how the Kingsville Boxwood came to be. Because it's a sport, it doesn't flower or produce seeds. Therefore. the only way to propagate is by rooting cuttings.

Sometimes a Kingsville will produce oversize foliage. If this occurs, the leaves should be removed, because if not, the plant will revert. I tested this once with a small one,and eventually it was all larger foliage and never came back to small.

My guess is that because it's a sport from the Korean box, the genetic info is always present. That brings up a "chicken and egg" question. Was the Korean box a dwarf a million years ago and evolved into what it is now? Something to ponder.

Mike,
This tree is an example of beingin the right place at the right time. About 6ish years ago now I was setting up at the PBA show in Wash. DC spring show and ex-assistant curator Dan Chiplis came walking through. Dan was very friendly and the nicest guy. I hated to see him leave the arboretum. Anyway, he had this big kingsville in his truck. I got it and pot for $400. He said it came from a yard in Washington somewhere. he figured about 40ish years old thenI think he said, but have no proof? I asked how he could get rid ofit. He said he was getting rid of some bigger trees. He still volunteered at arb. and said if he wanted to work on big trees he had all he could handle there!
At the time he said he thought it should go to the American display after a few years work because it was truly an "American" tree. I'd probably donate it IF they'd take a tree from Dale Cochoy.

I've never seen one other this big. It's much bigger than the old Monastery tree of Father Pauls that you see in pics.

I just got it away in greenhouse JUST before our terrible cold spell hit here all of a sudden. Maybe I'll go out and take a pic of how I overwinter it as I have described.
BTW, Dan Chiplis passed away, very young, last year.
Regards,
Dale

Mike,
Boy that name Hinds sounds familiar to me
I think my teacher, Keith Scott had kingsvilles from him.
In fact, along the "kick your own ass" lines, a few years ago the Columbus club bought a beautiful big oldy from Keith at his auction to have a demo done with. I think it was $250ish. It was growing in his yard in Ohio many years and he removed it when moving to Pittsburg. they never used it, I offered to buy it and they sold it to me. I had a local friend who wanted a nice big one, and needing money, I sold it to him and a pot since it was in a wood box. Now, when I see it, I want to kick my own butt! A nice profit then....seems small now
