wintering kingsvilles indoors
Hi all just a quick question about my trees. Ive read that kingsville box enjoys a cool period 50-55.I also understand that they only reguire about 800 lumes? Now would they do ok in a south facing window that does not get to warm, but receives about 5 hours of good light and about three hours of ok light. I cant leave them outside because they are in very shallow pots and Im in zone 5. Thanks in advance Rich.

bonsai is not my hobby

Rich,
I ovverwinter Kingsville boxwood (about 25 trees) in my cold greenhouse. There it gets down to the 20ies, well below freezing. They survive very well. If you want to take them into the house, make sure it is COLD. A garage window or similar would do. Light requirement when close to freezing is minimal. When it is warm they need a lot of light and will not do well anyway.

Old Bonsaiman-new pots

I have overwintered MANY Kingsvilles in my zone 5 unheated greenhouse, my plexiglass covered cold frame set to 6" below ground surface AND inside under lights over many years now. I've STOPPED bringing any of them in a few years ago. They ALL survive fine but the ones overwintered outside , no matter what size, always look greener in spring and respond faster to spring. I don't recommend inside overwintering any more. BTW, mine in unheated greenhouse have gone to below zero and I've never lost one. They are usually sitting on the floor if in nursery pots and if in bonsai pots snuggled into the mulch I use in boxes to cover touchy larger trees. I have a huge old kingsville that I keep in such a box. Mulch in bottom, pot set in, and mulch over pot. Pot is about 16" x 25" or thereabouts and last winter was so bad I had many pots crack, including this one around rim, but, tree did fine.
Regards, Dale

Here's a shot of my huge old Kingsville that I overwinter in a mulch back-filled box ( as described in my article in Matt's newsletter and the other thread on overwintering).
These tree has gone to below zero in my greenhouse. Not a very good picture but you get a size comparison with the ONE FOOT ruler next to it. Dale

Thanks Walter and Dale
Thank you for the advice. Dale your trees are amazing. Do you folks think it is to late to put them out this season. They have been inside for a month now. If you think I still have time to acclimate them i will give it a shot. Again Thanks for the replys. Rich

Dale,
Darn nice bonsai there, one of the best boxwoods I've seen in awhile! How far from Detroit are you? I just may have to come down and visit your studio for a few pots! Newforme, where you been? I haven't seen you around the shop lately, finish the job? Or is newforme+ a different person? I'm so confused. I have overwintered many different types of bonsai here in Michigan, but never tried a kingsville. The advice Walter and Dale gave is the same as I use for my less hardy bonsai though. Good Luck! Rich, If you are in zone 5 Michigan and have had that KB in for a month, I think I'd just keep it in now. You might kill it moving it out again. Next year I'd keep it out...protected. I've got 6, I think, pretty nice stock ones left here in Nursery cans. Will, from Detroit, I think about 3+hours. I live between Akron and Canton in NE Ohio. A Menonite dot on the map ! It is exactly 4 hours to Ann Arbor ""Darn nice bonsai there, one of the best boxwoods I've seen in awhile!"" Thanks. I doubt you've EVER seen one that size. Dale
